L’action se situe en milieu rural dans un huis-clos dramatique où s’affrontent les membres d’une famille qui se détestent mais qui montrent dans l’adversité une solidarité clanique face à une quelconque intrusion étrangère dans leurs affaires. Salué comme l’un des meilleurs films français consacrés à la paysannerie, tant par la thématique que par la vérité des personnages, il traduit bien davantage des stéréotypes véhiculés par l’imaginaire collectif que la réalité sociologique du monde rural. Sur le plan historique l’intérêt de l’œuvre, en raison de la polysémie de son contenu, réside dans les interprétations contradictoires dont elle a fait l’objet. |

| Summary, etc. | Based on a novel by Pierre Véry, the movie Goupi-Mains Rouges was released in 1943. The action takes place in the countryside, and consists in a claustrophobic, dramatic confrontation between members of a family who hate each other but display an unflagging clanic solidarity when, under difficult circumstances, they are faced with outside intervention in their lives. The movie was lauded as one of the best depictions ever in French cinema of the peasantry, both in its themes and in its veracity of character depictions. In fact, far from reflecting the sociological reality of the rural world, it was primarily a compendium of stereotypes widely held in the collective imaginary. Historically speaking, this object, characterized by its highly polysemic contents, is interesting above all because it gave rise to so many conflicting interpretations. |
