| Summary, etc. | RésuméEn 1670-1671, en plein cœur du règne de Louis XIV, une affaire atypique agite les juges du bailliage-présidial de Coutances. André Yvelin, un gentilhomme protestant vivant à Savigny, modeste village situé dans le Coutançais, est accusé d’avoir publiquement tenu des propos attentatoires à la personne royale, plusieurs mois auparavant. La mécanique judiciaire se met en branle. La publication de quelques-unes des pièces de la procédure – dénonciation, « information », interrogatoire et « confrontations » – est l’occasion de revenir sur les apports multiples des archives de la justice criminelle à la connaissance du monde rural. Des pratiques agraires ou agricoles à la sociabilité et à la culture villageoises, tout un monde quotidien se dévoile. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1670-1671, in the middle of Louis XIV’s reign, the judges at the bailliage-présidial de Coutances had to deal with an unusual case. André Yvelin, a Protestant squire who lived in Savigny, a small village in the Coutances area, was accused of having publicly uttered words offending the person of the King several months earlier. The accusation set the machinery of justice into motion. The publication of several elements in the procedure (denunciation, inquest, cross-examinations and confrontations) provides us with an opportunity to reassess the the multi-faceted contribution of criminal law archives to our knowledge of the rural world of the past. A whole daily universe is thus brought to life, from agrarian and agricultural practices to the sociability and culture of the village. |
