| Summary, etc. | Practice-based theories see grand challenges as broad patterns of action rooted in our everyday actions, especially organizational routines, while the endogenous dynamics of these routines are presented as a lever for action in the face of grand challenges. However, routines are also influenced by their embeddedness, the very foundations of which are called into question by grand challenges. We therefore study the capability of routines to reconfigure themselves on the sole basis of their endogenous dynamics, once the embeddedness that guides them is rendered definitively obsolete. Based on the singular but emblematic case of forest planning at the Office National des Forêts, we explore the reshuffling of this routine in the case of the “ForInnov” forest. Our findings help to reposition the notion of embeddedness as central to organizational routines, highlighting the decisive role and persistence that embeddedness imposes on routine dynamics. We thus contribute to nuancing the idea that routine dynamics alone enable their reconfiguration. |

| Summary, etc. | Les théories de la pratique (practice-based theories) considèrent les grands défis comme de larges modèles d’action, trouvant racines dans nos actions quotidiennes en particulier les routines organisationnelles. La dynamique endogène de ces dernières est toutefois présentée comme levier d’action pour faire face aux grands défis. Cependant, les routines sont également influencées par leur enchâssement. Or, les grands défis réinterrogent les fondements même de ce dernier. Nous interrogeons donc la capacité des routines à se recomposer sur la seule base de leur dynamique endogène lorsque l’enchâssement qui les guide est rendu définitivement obsolète. En s’appuyant sur le cas singulier mais emblématique de la planification forestière à l’Office National des Forêts, nous explorons la recomposition de cette routine dans le cas de la forêt « ForInnov ». Nos résultats contribuent à replacer la notion d’enchâssement au cœur des routines organisationnelles en soulignant le rôle déterminant et la rémanence qu’impose l’enchâssement à la dynamique des routines. Nous contribuons ainsi à nuancer l’idée que la seule dynamique des routines permet une recomposition de ces dernières. |
