520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The armed jihadist insurgency in central Mali has given rise to a counterinsurgency by self-defense groups such as Dan Na Ambassagou. Whether jihadist or self-defense fighters, these armed men from subaltern social groups seem to view the AK-47 as the ultimate tool for emancipation. Their pursuit of emancipation from dominations rooted in local sociopolitical and historical structures takes different paths depending on whether they claim jihad or self-defense. This article argues that armed violence is reshaping social relations within Fulani and Dogon societies in central Mali. The challenge to domination draws on both the denunciation of collusion between traditional Fulani political elites and civil servants, and the critique of rent-capture practices by educated, urbanized Dogon elites. Drawing on ethnographic data, the article illustrates how this quest mobilizes various registers of legitimizing violence, such as the call for jihad, resistance against a “new enslavement,” and reciprocal accusations of the Fulani and the Dogon dispossessing each other of their lands.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
