| Summary, etc. | Despite a long history, Syrian studies as an academic field has undergone fits and starts of expansion. Since the 1980s in particular, it has oscillated between calls for greater understanding and abrupt halts, largely in response to the imperatives dictated by the Syrian state regime. Drawing on our knowledge of the field and the research landscape, as well as a quantitative analysis of scholarly output, we examine what we term “still researching.” Although the revolutionary moment of 2011 did not directly create a breach in Syrian studies, researchers’ working conditions immediately changed at the very time they were being called on to explain the upheaval. After the initial shock, research themes and geographies evolved in line with the opportunities and obstacles brought about by the conflict. |

| Summary, etc. | Les Syrian Studies ont une histoire longue et connaissent un approfondissement par à-coups. En particulier, depuis les années 1980, elles oscillent entre appels à comprendre et coups d’arrêt, et ce largement en fonction des impératifs dictés par le régime. À partir d’une connaissance du terrain, du milieu de la recherche, et d’une exploration quantitative des productions sur le pays, nous analysons ce que nous appelons le « still researching ». Si le moment révolutionnaire de 2011 ne constitue pas directement une rupture pour les études syriennes, les chercheurs voient leurs conditions de recherches immédiatement modifiées, tout en étant sommés d’expliquer le bouleversement. Après la sidération, thématiques et cartographies de la recherche évoluent alors au gré des opportunités ou fermetures provoquées par le conflit. |
