520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In the first ethnographic study of the Jews in Russia ever done (1861), Moïseï Berlin described Jewish wedding rituals, as well as the roles of men and women in them. Rather than focusing on the folkloric aspects of the wedding, he emphasized the centrality of the woman’s chastity and the strict observance of Jewish religious rules and moral values. He thereby produced a positive and respectable image of Judaism and the Jews, in an effort to ease their integration into Russian society and the Empire.
