| Summary, etc. | The general purpose of this study is to understand, describe, and explain in detail the mechanisms of recovery from work-related stress through a leisure activity. This study focuses on the specific leisure activity of scuba diving because of promising results in the medical literature. The research methodology involved carrying out 36 semi-structured interviews with workers who practice scuba diving in their free time and were contacted through the French Federation of Underwater Studies and Sports. Lexical and thematic analyses of the resultant 294-page corpus reveal the mechanisms of recovery and link the characteristics of the activity to its effects on well-being at work. The main findings underline the relevance of the conceptual framework of recovery experiences through its four dimensions (psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery, and control) and add a fifth dimension: belonging to a group. In addition, the characteristics of scuba diving (contemplation of nature, weightlessness, silence, and breathing) are highlighted as factors in stress recovery, contributing to well-being at work and “therapy” against burnout. These findings on the mechanisms of stress recovery at work through leisure activities will encourage practitioners and researchers to continue investigating this area. |
