| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | Local culture and community participation: Djandioba family planning day in Burkina Faso Goal: In order to reduce cultural barriers to the use of modern contraceptive methods in the Tougan health district, a strategy was designed to promote contraceptive uptake called: Djandioba family planning day. The community, coordinated by health workers, regularly organizes this event devoted to family planning. This study was designed to evaluate this experience in order to draw useful lessons to improve the accessibility of modern contraceptive methods. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive survey was conducted over a five-year period in 39 health centres and among 448 beneficiaries in order to assess the effects of the intervention on contraceptive use. The results of this study were compared over time (2010-2015). Results: The four Djandioba days were organized in 39 health centres and helped to educate 197,548 people and provide contraceptive methods to 10,480 beneficiaries. A total of 4,598 new users were identified during these days. The number of couple-years of contraceptive protection of the district was multiplied by three over a period of three years. Conclusion: The combination of “local culture and community participation” as implementation support for health programmes is an effective approach to reduce cultural barriers of access to health services. These events have reduced the negative impact of perceptions, erroneous beliefs and misinformation about modern contraceptive methods commonly observed in target populations. |
