| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | The Advent of ModernityThe opposition between modernity and the ancient word arose from the French Revolution, but this political revolution does not by itself explain the specificity of modern societies. This article contends that Max Weber and Emile Durkheim locate the seeds of this new kind of society in the medieval city. It allows them to conceive of modernity as operating a rupture without abolishing historical continuity. However, while Durkheim’s understanding of the medieval city rests on the idea of the corporation, Weber’s understanding rests on the idea of the burgess oath. These two theoretical models thus stand apart from each other, as they draw from two different conceptions of modern societies’ identity and of their particular science, sociology. |
