| Summary, etc. | On a souvent assimilé l’utilitarisme à ce qu’il a voulu être : un calcul de plaisirs et de peines. Mais on s’est plus rarement avisé de savoir ce qu’il fallait entendre par calcul chez Bentham, qui en est resté aux réquisits, même s’il reproche à ses adversaires d’être incapables de conduire un tel calcul. S’agit-il d’user du calcul infinitésimal et intégral pour additionner, retrancher, multiplier, diviser des plaisirs et des douleurs ? S’agit-il d’évaluer ceux-ci par un calcul de probabilité ? Bentham paraît avoir fourni, par son œuvre, un schématisme, plus littéraire que mathématique, que constituent les façons communes de désigner les plaisirs et les douleurs avec des sciences comme l’économie politique, la psychophysique ou la psychophysiologie, la théorie des jeux ont commencé à en faire au xixe siècle et en feront plus tard. |

| Summary, etc. | Utilitarianism has often been identified to what it has pretended to be: a calculation of pleasures and pains. But one has, more seldom, thought of the knowledge that must be meant by calculation. Bentham seems remaining to the level of requites, even if he reproaches his adversaries for being unable to lead such a calculation. Is it the matter to use of differential and integral calculus in view to add, subtract, multiply, divide, pleasures and pains? Is it to evaluate them by a probability theory? Bentham has provided, in terms more literary than mathematical, a schematism between the common verbal means to point out pleasures and pains and the dealing that economics, psychophysics and psychophysiology, the theory of games, will do with the topic, later. |
