| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | “I killed my child” – Considering the Clinical Practice of Voluntary Pregnancy TerminationBased on the clinical account of a late voluntary pregnancy termination by a young woman, the author considers the sentence “I killed my child”, heard repeatedly in such cases, as a conscious expression of the unconscious fantasy of infanticide. The voluntary termination of a pregnancy can thus be considered as acting out this fantasy, which allows us also to understand the enormous guilt that usually comes after an intervention. The author then suggests that this acting out is an attempt, channelled through the body, to replace an incomplete symbolic castration, i.e., an incomplete separation from the primary Other. This active substitution will eventually fail unless its meaning is not expressed verbally. |
