| Summary, etc. | Dans le De operationibus occultis naturae, Thomas d’Aquin explique la notion de propriété occulte découlant de la forme spécifique des choses inanimées, qui rend compte de phénomènes inexplicables par le seul agencement des qualités premières, conformément à un cadre philosophique et médical hérité en partie de Galien et Avicenne. Pour Thomas, ces propriétés ne sont qu’un étage dans une présentation d’un ordre hiérarchisé des êtres définis par l’union hylémorphique et couronné par l’homme, dont la forme substantielle est l’âme. On trouve des parallèles à cette construction dans le De mineralibus d’Albert le Grand. D’autres occurrences dans le corpus des œuvres de Thomas d’Aquin, où l’aimant doté d’une propriété attractive est comparé à l’homme doté d’une âme, permettent de mieux comprendre pourquoi Thomas d’Aquin accepte les propriétés occultes spécifiques ou substantielles, mais rejette les propriétés occultes individuelles ou accidentelles. |

| Summary, etc. | In De operationibus occultis naturae, Thomas Aquinas explains the notion of occult properties arising from the specific forms of inanimate things, which accounts for phenomena that cannot be explained by the mere arrangement of primary qualities, in accordance with a philosophical and medical framework partly inherited from Galen and Avicenna. For Thomas, these properties are only one level in a hierarchically ordered array of beings defined by the hylemorphic union and crowned by man, whose substantial form is the soul. One finds parallels to this construction in Albert the Great's De mineralibus. Other occurrences in Thomas Aquinas’works, where the magnet endowed with an attractive property is compared to man endowed with a soul, allow us to better understand why Thomas Aquinas accepts specific or substantial occult properties, but rejects individual or accidental occult properties. |
