Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Do medieval exegetes display a particular attitude regarding the stories of the Bible that we introduce into the category of “myth” ? We aim to answer this question through an examination of the genealogies of chapters four and five of Genesis in the commentaries composed between the xiith and xivth centuries in the West. Those of chapter four (v. 17-22) are considered a myth on the origins of culture – the pastoral life, the work of metals, music, weaving –, those of chapter five present various problems, namely because of the length of the lives of the characters involved. It seems that the commentators of the Middle Ages are less sensitive to the “historical” dimension of these texts than to the teachings that we can deduce from the origins of human behaviour. The analysis that they perfom on the structure of these texts (using the symbolic value associated with numbers and underlining the differences of composition) and the tropological applications that they draw, infering from the Holy Scriptures the teachings of the Word permanently directed toward man, demonstrate that the methods that they use are akin to a certain analysis of myth today.
