| Summary, etc. | This article analyzes the birth and development of sacred or divine kingships in Madagascar. It reassesses Deschamps’ hypothesis which situates the origin of Malagasy kingships in Southeastern Madagascar, a region marked by Islamic influences. It examines the cultural impact of various Indonesian migrants, and the result of their mixing with East African populations, as well as the characteristics of the Antemoro kingdom which formed during the sixteenth century. It describes the ways in which the connection of long-distance trade with internal developments influenced various kingdoms’ trajectories. Although the Southeastern coast, where the Zafiraminia settled, did have historical significance in the development of kingships, this study reveals that the role played therein by the western coast along with the Northern Malagasy region’s cosmopolitan ports has been widely underestimated. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article situe historiquement la naissance et le développement des royautés divines ou sacrées de Madagascar, en revisitant l’hypothèse de Deschamps plaçant dans le Sud-Est de l’île — marqué par un apport islamique — l’origine des constructions monarchiques. Il examine l’impact des migrants indonésiens, leur métissage avec des populations d’origine est-africaine, les caractéristiques du royaume antemoro qui se forme au XVIe siècle, et montre comment le lien du commerce au loin avec des développements internes a influé sur les trajectoires des différents royaumes. Il ressort de cette étude que si le rôle du Sud-Est, où les Zafiraminia se sont installés, a effectivement été déterminant sur le plan historique, celui de la côte ouest et des ports cosmopolites du Nord de l’île a été largement sous-estimé. |
