| Summary, etc. | Au cours du xixe siècle, les villes et les chemins de fer sont les symboles extérieurs les plus impressionnants du capitalisme. Les ouvrages sur le sujet insistent sur le rôle fondamental des voies ferrées sur la croissance et la formation des villes : augmentation de la demande de services et de commerce, stimulation des échanges, réduction des distances, modification de la notion de temporalité et introduction de la vitesse comme donnée permanente des modes de vie. Le chemin de fer matérialise le triomphe de la technique et l’incorpore au quotidien urbain ; il crée de nouveaux personnages et apparaît essentiel dans la (ré)organisation du monde du travail. Pour exister, il a besoin d’équipements nouveaux et inédits qui, insérés dans le réseau des villes, vont altérer les flux, les mouvements et les possibilités d’expansion. Ce travail vise à montrer la relation entre les chemins de fer, les villes et la construction du territoire en prenant comme référence l’État de São Paulo. Il s’agit de reconnaître les spécificités brésiliennes et, surtout, les diversités des situations observées à São Paulo en questionnant les lectures qui associent le chemin de fer au progrès. |

| Summary, etc. | Throughout the 19th century, cities and railways are the most impressive outer symbols of capitalism. The bibliography on the topic is recurrent while highlighting the fundamental role of railroads on the formation and growth of cities: population expansion and increased demand for services and trade, stimulation of exchanges, shortening of distances, changes in the notion of temporality and introduction of speed in a permanent lifestyle imposed with the advent of capitalism. The railroad symbolizes the triumph of technique and incorporates it in the urban daily life. It is essential in the (re)organisation of the world of workers. Its existence permanently requires new equipment inserted into the plot of the changing city flows, movements and expansion possibilities. This paper shows the relationship between the constitution of railways, cities and territorial construction in the State of São Paulo. Brazil might be considered very specific. However the processes occurring in São Paulo are manifolds, as well as the relationship between railways and modernity. |

| Summary, etc. | Ciudades y ferrocarriles serán, a lo largo del siglo xix, los símbolos externos más impresionantes del capitalismo. La bibliografía sobre el tema es recurrente al destacar el papel fundamental que los ferrocarriles tuvieron en el crecimiento y la formación de las ciudades al expandir la demanda de servicios y el comercio, estimular los intercambios, acorta las distancias, alterar la noción de la temporalidad e introducir la velocidad como dato permanente de los modos de vida. El ferrocarril materializa el triunfo de la técnica y la incorpora a lo urbano cotidiano; crea nuevos personajes y es esencial en la (re) organización del mundo del trabajo. Su existencia exige la creación de nuevos e inéditos equipamientos que, insertos en el tejido urbano de las ciudades, alterarán flujos, movimientos y posibilidades de expansión. A partir de estas afirmaciones, se pretende problematizar la relación entre ferrocarriles, ciudades y construcción del territorio tomando por referencia el estado de Sao Paulo. Se trata de reconocer las especificidades pero, sobre todo, la diversidad de situaciones que tuvieron lugar en Sao Paulo, problematizando las lecturas que asocian ferrocarril y progreso. |
