| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’arrêt que le Grand Conseil rend le 7 septembre 1694 témoigne d’un siècle de procès et présente les titres les plus anciens de l’ordre de Malte et du seigneur de l’ancienne bastide royale de Castelnau-sur-Gupie. Les contestations qui retardent son exécution permettent aussi de saisir les calculs des Hospitaliers puis de mesurer les conséquences du compromis auquel ils se rallient finalement. Le dossier ainsi réuni illustre combien les archives judiciaires peuvent, en ouvrant son histoire sur la longue durée, enrichir la connaissance d’un terroir et éclairer les choix de ses seigneurs, administrateurs ou exploitants. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1694, a judgement by the Grand Conseil settled conflicting claims over Castelnau, a former royal fortified town, over which the Order of Hospitallers and the local Counts had been fighting for a century. The diplomas and title deeds described by the judges tell two different tales on the origins of Castelnau. But the decision did not wholly put the case to rest, and the issues raised by its application called for a hotly contested compromise. Judicial archives can thus not only reveal the forgotten history of an estate, but they also explain how its lords or tenants made some of their choices. |
