| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’implantation de maisons du Peuple dans les campagnes finlandaises est un phénomène de grande ampleur entre 1893 et 1917. Dirigés pour l’essentiel par des militants sociaux-démocrates après 1903, ces organismes montrent un grand intérêt non seulement pour les questions politiques ou sociales, mais également pour les activités socio-culturelles. Grâce à eux, les ruraux pauvres font l’apprentissage de la vie associative et citoyenne tout en accédant à certaines formes d’initiation à l’art et au savoir livresque. De fait, les maisons du Peuple ont joué un rôle majeur dans la constitution d’une sensibilité proprement finlandaise à l’égalité sociale et à l’éducation des adultes. |

| Summary, etc. | From 1893 to 1917, the setting up of People’s Houses constituted a major development in the Finnish countryside. From 1903 on, these organizations were mostly headed by social-democrat activists, and focussed heavily not only on political or social issues, but also on socio-cultural activities. Thanks to them, the rural poor were initiated to the practice of grassroots and civic action, while being introduced up to a point to the arts and to written knowledge. People’s Houses actually played a major role in the building of a specifically Finnish approach to social equality and adult education. |
