| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article rappelle les ambitions et les enjeux théoriques qui ont conduit Sen à penser une nouvelle conception de l’avantage individuel et des évaluations sociales. Souvent perçue comme relevant de la philosophie morale, l’approche par les capabilités (AC) apparaît comme l’œuvre d’un théoricien du choix social dont l’éclectisme des recherches a permis d’aboutir à une approche du choix social plus ouverte et moins mécanique que celle proposée par Arrow en 1950. Grâce à une concentration nouvelle sur l’espace des potentiels et des capacités individuels et un glissement essentiel du rationnel vers le raisonnable, l’AC offre un cadre renouvelé pour l’économie normative.Classification du JEL : B 310 |

| Summary, etc. | This article recalls the ambitions and theoretical issues that led Sen to develop a new conception of individual advantage and social evaluation. This Capability Approach (CA) is often regarded as moral philosophy. However, it arose from the work of a social choice theorist, whose eclecticism allowed a social choice approach to be formulated, which is more open and less mechanistic than that proposed by Arrow (1950). Due to its new focus on the scope of individual potentials and capacities, and a substantial shift from rationality to reason, Sen’s CA provides a renewed theoretical framework for normative economics. |
