| Summary, etc. | Vivre seul est une donnée fondamentale dans la trajectoire des hommes immigrés en France. Dans un premier temps, l’article s’attache à comparer la situation des hommes immigrés isolés vivant dans les différentes composantes du parc de logements (foyers de travailleurs migrants, parc diffus et parc classique de logements). La spécificité des résidants des foyers se dégage résolument, tant en ce qui concerne leurs caractéristiques sociales et familiales que migratoires et résidentielles. La population des résidants des foyers s’est constituée rapidement, au cours des années soixante et soixante-dix. Plus âgés que les autres au moment de la migration, ils étaient souvent déjà mariés et pères en arrivant en France. On retrouve par conséquent aujourd’hui, dans leurs actes et leurs discours, une véritable dualité : la conservation de contacts très étroits avec le pays d’origine et un attachement profond à la France. Ils sont tout à la fois «d’ici et de là-bas». Dans un second temps, l’étude de quelques indicateurs statistiques permet de prendre la mesure du vieillissement et de la précarisation accrue des occupants des foyers sur la période 1990-1999. Ce constat renforce l’idée que se joue, avec la transformation des foyers en résidences sociales, un tournant pour le secteur. Les attentes sont doubles : en premier lieu, l’accompagnement du passage à la retraite, du vieillissement et l’accès aux droits et aux soins des résidants ; en second lieu, la gestion des nouveaux modes de cohabitation des occupants avec la diversification attendue du profil des résidants. |

| Summary, etc. | Isolated Immigrants: The Specific Case of Hostel Residents Living alone is a fundamental factor in the life path of immigrant men in France. Firstly, this paper seeks to compare the situation of isolated immigrant men living in the different forms of available housing (hostels for migrant workers, apartments on the private market, subsidised housing blocks). Hostel residents stand out clearly, in terms of their social, family, migratory and residential characteristics. The hostel population formed rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s. Older than other migrants, they were often already married and fathers when they arrived in France. Consequently, their behaviour and speech now reflects a real duality: continuing close contact with the country of origin and a strong attachment to France. They are at once “from here and there”. Secondly, examination of a few statistical indicators highlights the ageing and increasing vulnerability of hostel residents over the 1990-1999 period. This observation supports the idea that the conversion of hostels into permanent welfare residences represents a watershed for the sector. The residents have two kinds of expectation: first, for support through retirement and old age and access to rights and medical care; secondly, for management of new forms of cohabitation with the expected diversification of the profile of residents. |
