| Summary, etc. | Au xviiie siècle, l’analyse historiographique des anciens Normands commence à se modifier sensiblement. Préfigurant la littérature du siècle suivant, plusieurs ouvrages attestent un intérêt croissant pour les mœurs et caractères des hommes du Nord et, partant, proposent une nouvelle approche de leur histoire. Tout en s’inspirant de ses prédécesseurs, Montesquieu intègre les invasions normandes à un mouvement qui, illustré depuis l’Empire romain jusqu’à l’époque carolingienne, configure les rapports « Peuples du Nord/Peuples du Midi ». Le baron de la Brède participe ainsi à associer aux Scandinaves un archétype de liberté politique, et invite à porter sur eux un regard qui ne sera pas sans exercer une influence sur l’historiographie juridique normande et les Lettres du Romantisme. |
