| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | Peasants against the sea. Polders and reclaimed land in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel (11th-15th centuries)By comparing recent studies with early-modern sources (and especially maps), regressive analysis throws new light on the rare medieval documents (dating from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries) that describe how the south-east and eastern regions of the bay were rendered productive. Under the direction of lay (Dol-Combourg) and ecclesiastical (abbeys of Vieuville, Montmorel and Mont Saint-Michel) lords, hundreds of hectares were reclaimed and transformed into agricultural land during a relatively peaceful era. These lands were important enough for the creation of a new parish (Paluel) to the west of the Couesnon river. Beginning in the fifteenth century, demographic decline and ecological changes (silting up of the bay, changes in the river beds) progressively destroyed these lands which recovered their semi-maritime vocation of pastures and salt-marshes until the nineteenth century. |
