| Summary, etc. | Cette recherche biographique sur l’enseigne de vaisseau et capitaine au long cours Jean Louis Favre (1786 - ?) fait suite à la fouille, par Anglo-Danish Maritime Archaeological Team, de l’épave du brick le Casimir en République Dominicaine(www.admat.org.uk). Les causes du naufrage avancées par les témoins et par les acteurs de la perte du navire étant en contradiction avec celles produites par le capitaine, j’ai voulu connaître ce capitaine nommé Jean Louis Favre, afin de comprendre les imputations de mensonge. Mes recherches m’ont fait découvrir les rocambolesques aventures d’un jeune officier, fils (homonyme) d’un grand corsaire havrais de la fin du xviiie siècle et de la Révolution. Suite à ses errances antillaises et par la force des choses, Jean Louis Favre fils devient capitaine au long cours avant de disparaître mystérieusement après 1829. Sa carrière maritime retracée ici est jalonnée de péripéties militaires, d’obscurs trafics, de fortunes de mer et finalement de naufrages. |

| Summary, etc. | The fantastic adventures of Jean Louis Favre (1786- ?), midshipman and shipwrecked captain in French overseas tradeThis biography of Jean Louis Favre is tributary to the study by the Anglo-Danish Maritime Archaeological Team, of the wreck of the brig Le Casimir off the Dominican Republic.(www.admat.org.uk). The accounts of witnesses of the loss of this ship differed from that of its captain, Favre, and I was curious to discover who had lied. My research enabled me to unearth the fantastic career of the son of a corsair from Le Havre during the Revolutionary period. After sailing the Caribbean, Favre became a master before mysteriously disappearing after 1829. His career is highlighted by military prowess, obscure financial dealings and finally by shipwreck. |
