| Summary, etc. | Demeurés à l’écart du grand dessein maritime de Colbert, les petits ports, havres et rades de Normandie, ainsi que les cours d’eau navigables, tirent malgré tout leur épingle du jeu s’ils ont l’avantage d’être animés par des élites marchandes entreprenantes en pêche comme en cabotage, voire par la pluriactivité, ce qui est loin d’être le cas pour de nombreuses communautés littorales. La configuration de leurs rivages et accès portuaires jouent bien évidemment un rôle tout aussi important dans le développement de leurs activités halieutiques ou de transport par cabotage. Les intendants encouragent toute synergie entre l’établissement de manufactures et les circuits de cabotage, soutiennent le timide essor des armements terreneuviers bas-normands, mais les guerres successives entreprises au nom du culte solaire royal remettent rapidement en cause tous les efforts accomplis. |

| Summary, etc. | Forgotten in the grand designs of Colbert’s maritime strategy, small Norman ports and harbours as well as navigable rivers managed to prosper when merchant elites devoted activities to fisheries and local transport. Their success was, of course, dependant on access to fishery resources and to regional ports. Intendants encouraged synergies between manufacturers and coastal trade and the Newfoundland fisheries, but wars to maintain royal prestige undermined all these efforts. |
