| Summary, etc. | En dépit de l’absence d’archives, l’examen de l’église Saint-Georges de Caen permet d’en préciser la chronologie et ainsi d’éclairer l’histoire de cette paroisse indissociable du château de la capitale bas-normande. D’une reconstruction entreprise vers 1100 subsistent l’arc triomphal et les murs-gouttereaux de la nef. Celle-ci a été modifiée au xive siècle par l’ajout de fenêtres puis dans la première moitié du xve par la pose d’une nouvelle charpente évoquant des modèles anglais. Une transformation plus ambitieuse, comprenant la construction d’un nouveau chœur et l’ajout d’une chapelle pour le gouverneur, accompagna la transformation du château en citadelle. L’église fut dès lors réservée à la garnison, dont les tombes témoignent de la vie paroissiale. Devenue dépôt de munition après la Révolution, elle fut endommagée en 1944 puis restaurée pour devenir un mémorial de la Bataille de Caen. |

| Summary, etc. | Despite the paucity of archives, the study of Saint-George’s church within the walls of Caen’s castle sheds light on the history of this emblematic parish in the capital of Lower Normandy. Reconstructed around 1100, the triumphal arch and the outer walls of the nave remain. The nave was remodeled in the Fourteenth Century by the addition of windows and, in the first half of the next century, by a roof inspired by English models. A more ambitious reconstruction when the castle became a military citadel transformed the choir and added a chapel for the Governor’s use. Thereafter, the church was reserved for the garrison as is attested by numerous tombs. Used as a munitions depot after the Revolution, the church was badly damaged in 1944 before becoming a memorial for the battle to liberate Caen. |
