| Summary, etc. | Pourquoi une université ? Une université pour quoi faire ? Telles sont les deux principales questions posées après la destruction de l’université de Caen en 1944. Sur le premier point, la reconstruction d’une université à Caen apparaît immédiatement comme une condition impérative au relèvement de la cité, soucieuse de maintenir et de développer ses fonctions métropolitaines aux échelles régionale, nationale et même internationale. Sur le second point, la reconstruction est le moment d’une interrogation générale sur les missions de l’université, qui évoluent alors de manière sensible. Aux participations planifiées de l’université à la vie de la cité (expertise et contribution au développement économique régional notamment), s’ajoutent rapidement des implications non anticipées : universitaires et étudiants deviennent en quelques années des acteurs centraux du champ politique et social caennais. |

| Summary, etc. | Why rebuild a university and for what reason? These are the two fundamental questions after the 1944 destruction of the University of Caen. In answer to the first, the reconstruction was imperative to rebuild the city and insure its metropolitan dominance in a regional, national and even international context. In answer to the second, reconstruction was a key moment to define the role of the university in an ever evolving context. Originally, the University was viewed as a major player in providing expertise for local and regional economic development but students and professors rapidly became key actors in Caen’s social and political spheres. |
