| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Many pictorial representations of the Wandering Jew, icon of a Christian myth, have been edited. But, very few statues represent the character. The statue in Flers was sculpted by a Norman artist Leharivel-Durocher, who made many religious statues. Middle-aged Christian iconography and Epinal imagery were the sources of “His” Wandering Jew. Leharivel-Durocher exhibited the plaster statue in the 1877 Salon. Then he achieved a bronze statue that the director of Fine arts ordered to him to be offered to Flers. Being placed on a pedestal at the centre of the Delaunay square in 1881, it was the subject of vandalism acts and of anti-Semitic poems. However, at the same time, press articles which defended it and compassionate poems were published. In 1922, the statue was replaced by a memorial and put in the Public garden. It remained there up to its departure to be melted in 1941. Its souvenir is kept through postcards edited at the beginning of 20th century that visitors of Flers sent to their family or friends. |
