| Summary, etc. | À Caen, le nouveau Stade nautique nouvellement dénommé, en 2014, Eugène Maës (1890-1945) pose la question de l’histoire locale du développement des sports aquatiques et de la mémoire collective de ceux qui ont fréquenté l’établissement « Chez Maës, Au Lido ». Cette étude historique vise donc à identifier les éléments du cheminement biographique d’Eugène Maës qui, d’une guerre à l’autre, ont conduit le conseil municipal de Caen à adopter ce choix pour honorer la mémoire d’un animateur de la vie sociale et sportive caennaise mort en déportation en 1945. Eugène Maës, footballeur de renom, a amorcé localement le développement de la natation sportive et du water-polo, contribué à sauver des vies en apprenant à nager à de nombreuses personnes, favorisé, dans le tissu associatif local, les conditions d’un brassage social par le biais de manifestations spectaculaires et originales, et enfin, permis aux Caennais de venir danser et écouter du jazz dans son café-dancing « Au Lido ». Ce choix constitue aussi un acte politique républicain contre l’oubli des victimes du nazisme. |

| Summary, etc. | The Eugène Maës (1890-1945) Nautical Stadium in Caen, thus recently named in 2014, raises the issue of the local history of water sports as well as that of the collective memory of « Chez Maës, Au Lido » patrons. The aim of this historical study is to point out the elements of Eugène Maës’ life course, from the first to the second World War, that have led the Caen City Council to make this particular choice and honour the memory of a personality who animated the social and sportive life of Caen, and died in 1945 in a concentration camp. Eugène Maës, a famous soccer player, initiated the local development of sportive swimming and water polo, contributed to saving lives by teaching many people how to swim, furthered the conditions of social mixing in the local associative network thanks to spectacular and original sporting events, and finally, allowed the people of Caen to come and dance or listen to jazz music in his « Au Lido » café-cum-dancing hall. This choice also constitutes a republican, political action against forgetting the victims of Nazism. |
