| Summary, etc. | Au début du xvie siècle, les Normands commencent à pratiquer la pêche à la morue à Terre-Neuve, une activité qui ne tarde pas à se développer sans doute jusqu’au début des années 1560 ; elle connaît alors une stagnation, à un bon niveau pendant une trentaine d’années, la dernière décennie du siècle étant plus difficile. Les marchands de Rouen financent ces expéditions, les marins provenant essentiellement des ports de la vallée de la Seine. Dès le milieu du siècle, des changements se produisent : développement de la pêche errante sur les bancs et surtout mainmise du Havre, de ses marins et de ses marchands sur cette activité pendant que Rouen se consacre au commerce avec l’empire espagnol et l’Afrique du Nord. |

| Summary, etc. | In the early 16th century, the Normans began to practice cod fishing in Newfoundland, an activity that was undoubtedly developed until the early 1560s ; it then stagnated at a good level for thirty years, the last decade of the century being tougher. The merchants of Rouen finance these expeditions, the sailors coming mainly from the ports of the Seine valley. From the middle of the century, changes occur : development of banks fishery and Le Havre, with its sailors and merchants, maintained a monopoly of this activity while Rouen stays devoted to trade with the Spanish empire and North Africa. |
