| Summary, etc. | A curious remission letter granted in April 1359 to three bourgeois from Caen, responsible for the death of a certain Pierre de Montfort, has until now drawn attention mainly because of one unusual detail: The supplicants report that in 1358, during the Jacquerie revolt, Montfort “wore a wooden plow in place of a feather on his hat.” Yet the partial publication of the document by Siméon Luce has not, to date, allowed scholars to explore the possible link between this Pierre de Montfort and a (presumed) tax uprising in the same town in 1359, nor even with a “riot” in 1357 “that escalated into a bloody settling of scores.” Furthermore, Pierre de Montfort—portrayed here as a dangerous troublemaker seeking to “sow dissension between the commoners and the town’s elite”—turns out to be a bourgeois himself. His action are therefore most likely connected to the demands pressed by non-nobles during a period that proved extremely turbulent for French royalty. In any event, they fit squarely within the context of a revival of Caen’s municipal government—an institution that we may have been too quick to consider unwavering in its support of royal power. |

| Summary, etc. | Une étrange lettre de rémission accordée en avril 1359 à trois bourgeois de Caen responsables de la mort d’un certain Pierre de Montfort a jusqu’à présent surtout attiré l’attention du fait d’un détail insolite. Les suppliants rapportent en effet qu’en 1358, pendant la grande Jacquerie, Montfort « prit et portoit sur son chapel, en lieu de plume, une charue de bois ». Seulement, l’édition partielle du document par Siméon Luce ne semble pas avoir permis jusqu’à présent d’explorer le lien éventuel entre ce Pierre de Montfort et une révolte (a priori) fiscale dans la même ville en 1359, ni même avec une « émeute » de 1357 « qui dégénère en sanglant règlement de comptes ». Par ailleurs, Pierre de Montfort, qui passe ici pour un dangereux agitateur qui cherche à « mettre descort entre le menu commun et les gros de la ville », s’avère en réalité être un bourgeois de la ville. Son action s’inscrit peut-être donc davantage dans le cadre des revendications des non-nobles dans cette période fort compliquée pour la royauté française. On constate en tout cas qu’elle s’inscrit exactement dans le contexte de la renaissance d’une municipalité caennaise que l’on a peut-être trop cru inconditionnellement favorable au pouvoir royal. |
