520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Karl Kraus (1874-1936), a satirist, poet and playwright, had rather erratic commitments which shocked his most eminent supporters (Bertold Brecht, Elias Canetti). But faced with the most frightening threat of the inter-war period, he was not mistaken and foresaw the rise of the Swastika as soon as 1921. At the same time, Freud published Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. Actually Kraus had appreciated reading The Interpretation of Dreams in 1899, but in 1907 he turned away from Freud and from then on he criticized psychoanalysis. I mean to show how clear-sighted he proved when he understood the danger represented by nazism while no one at the time seemed to take it seriously. Besides he systematically unveiled the double language through which National Socialism came to power mesmerizing and bewildering the masses. In The third Walpurgis Night, written after Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, Kraus condemned the violence exerted against jews and about which the german media remained silent and he exposed the limits of both mind and language faced with Hitler’s steamroller. Fearing for his friends in Berlin, he only published extracts of this book in one of the last issue of Die Fackel in 1934. Kraus’s analysis of the german nightmarish future he faced sheds light on contemporary issues.
