520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. >The castellum aquae of Pompeii ; an architectural study. The Pompeii water tower found in 1902 was built at the highest point of the town, attached to the West side of the Vesuvius Gate. Water from one branch of the Serino aqueduct was collected in the water basin. The Aqueduct, with the tower, date to the Augustan period. Before flowing into the urban system the water from the specus had to pass through railings between the gallery of the aqueduct and the interior of the tower, then through a second filtration grill, and finally through a small lead pipe to be clarified. The building was covered with a masonry cupola, 5.8 m in diameter, one of the oldest vaults of this type. The tower was partially damaged in the earthquake of AD 62, but quickly restored to supply water to the city via a temporary network built over its pavement. A low relief depicting the earthquake shows the tower before restoration. After the eruption scrap-metal dealers drilled a hole in the vault and stole the filtration unit and iron and lead pipes.
