| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’utilisation récurrente du mot « dédalique » dans les études récentes sur la sculpture grecque du haut-archaïsme fait apparaître une grande diversité dans le contenu de cette notion, formée à l’origine d’après le nom de l’artisan légendaire Dédale. « Dédalique » peut ainsi avoir un sens stylistique, géographique et, surtout, un sens chronologique plus ou moins précis. Mais ces différents emplois reposent sur un ensemble de présupposés et de conceptions anciennes qui ne sont pour ainsi dire jamais explicitées. Si l’on veut comprendre pourquoi les chercheurs continuent de s’y référer, malgré la confusion qui en résulte, il paraît donc nécessaire de retracer les différentes étapes de l’histoire de la notion même de « dédalisme ». On pourra ainsi s’interroger sur son utilité réelle et se demander si elle est encore susceptible de nous aider à comprendre la sculpture grecque du haut-archaïsme. |

| Summary, etc. | An embarrassing notion in the history of Greek sculpture: “The Daedalic”Scholars have recently used the term “Daedalic style” for their analyses of archaic sculpture: this notion, named after the mythical artisan Daedalus, has many meanings and can apply to the style, the geography but also the chronology. All these different meanings are linked with the history of this notion, but they are never explained as such. The aim of this paper is first to examine recent use(s) of the word “Daedalic”, to recall then the origins and the history of this notion and finally to wonder if it is still of value for the study of the sculpture of the 7th cent. bc. Why do scholars keep on using this term? |
