| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | A small Delian riddle : the “curious offerings” of the hieronauts of TyreFound in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delos in 1877, an architectural block bearing a bilingual dedication (Greek and Phoenician) has remained relatively unknown. Kept in the Epigraphical Museum of Athens (no. EM 1862), it was long considered as being lost. The inscription informs us that the small monument contained the statues of the cities of Tyre and Sidon, dedicated by the “hieronauts” of Tyre. These works, dated around 340 bc, can be compared with other personifications of cities attested in Classical art, and especially on coins of the Salaminian king Evagoras II showing Aphrodite’s head wearing a turreted crown, as also with some Cypriot limestone statues of the same period. |
