| Summary, etc. | Cet article réévalue la place occupée par Messène dans les itinéraires péloponnésiens des premiers voyageurs européens, avant les fouilles et les relevés de l’expédition scientifique de Morée (1829), et fait le point sur leur contribution à la connaissance du site archéologique et de ses vestiges. Une vingtaine de visites ont été recensées, entre 1447 et 1828, impliquant dix-sept Britanniques, onze Français, cinq Allemands, un Italien et un Danois. L’accent est mis sur les représentations graphiques, souvent inédites, qui accompagnent les récits de plusieurs d’entre eux. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper re-evaluates the place of Messene in the Peloponnesian routes of the first European travellers, prior to the excavations and surveys of the scientific expedition to the Morea (1829), and reviews their contribution to our knowledge of the archaeological site and its remains. Twenty visits were recorded from 1447 to 1828, involving seventeen British, eleven French, five German, an Italian and a Dane. Emphasis is placed on the graphic representations, often unpublished, which accompany the narratives of several of them. |
