520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Since its discovery near Pompeii in 1897, the mosaic “of the Philosophers”, similar to another mosaic from Sarsina, has led to various interpretations: Platon’s Academy, Aristotle’s Lyceum, the Seven Wise Men. The article first synthesizes the various theses’ arguments, and their stakes. It then re-examines the emblema to correct some mistakes in its reading and reject these identifications. The landscape in the background represents the Nile Valley; the intellectuals gathered here belong to Alexandria’s Museum; the main figure is Eratosthenes. The mosaic’s model dates back to Ptolemy III Euergetes. The interest of Roman elites in the heroes of intellect or mankind might explain the discovery of these mosaics at Pompeii or Sarsina.
