| Summary, etc. | Dans les années 1880-1910, la description archéologique est une pratique courante sur les sites de fouilles, chez les savants ou pendant la visite des musées. Cet article, qui envisage le cas des préhistoriens français, analyse les formes prises par la description au cours des différentes étapes du travail savant : topographies, lexiques, commentaires d’images, analogies, guides présentant les collections d’objets. L’étude envisage aussi bien les pratiques normalisées promues par la Société préhistorique de France que les manières de faire plus libres de la plupart des archéologues, à partir d’exemples concrets pris dans des manuels et des monographies ainsi que dans les principales revues archéologiques. |

| Summary, etc. | During the years 1880-1910, archaeological description was a common practice on excavation sites, among scholars or during visits to museums. This article, which considers the case of French prehistorians, analyses the forms taken by description during the different stages of scholarly work: topographies, lexicons, pictures’ commentaries, analogies, guides presenting collections of objects. The study considers both the standard practices promoted by the Société préhistorique de France as well as the freer ways of working of most archaeologists, based on concrete examples taken from manuals and monographs as well as from the main archaeological journals. |
