| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Pompeii has produced seven examples of scholae, a type of funerary monument of the early Julio-Claudian age, unknown outside that city, deriving from the seat of magistrates and philosophers in Greek gymnasia. The schola consists in a large semi-circular seat built on public soil according to a decurional vote, that gave to the tombs a sort of a heroic aura. It was an exceptional honour reserved to the top of the municipal élite, in the earliest period to priestesses of Ceres and Venus and tribuni militum a populo, later to wives of magistrates, now frequently of rather obscure origins. |
