| Summary, etc. | Curiosité et imagination font de Balzac à la fois un décorateur et un metteur en scène. Mais pour lui, comme pour Baudelaire, l’enjeu véritable de la description et du récit est métaphysique. L’apparition des pièces du mobilier est un phénomène au sens heideggerien du terme, avec leurs qualités objectives, mais détachables et descriptibles hors d’elles-mêmes. Le décor intérieur a donc une fonction narrative, incite au déchiffrement, instaure une morale et une méditation sur la permanence du mobilier, comme pour conjurer la perspective de l’immobilité définitive. En philosophe, Balzac, par une réflexion inédite sur les qualités réelles, sensibles et sensuelles du décor intérieur, pose les fondements d’une ontologie des objets inséparable d’une véritable métaphysique des mœurs. |

| Summary, etc. | Curiosity and imagination enable Balzac to be both a stage designer and stage director. But for Balzac, as for Baudelaire, the real issue is that description and narrative are essentially metaphysical. Furniture and furnishings are ‘phenomena’ in the Heideggerian sense, having objective qualities but existing as independent, describable entities. Interior decor thus has a narrative function, encouraging interpretation, embodying a certain ethics and offering a view on the permanence of furniture as if warding off the prospect of eternal stasis. As a philosopher, Balzac offers an original view on the real, perceptible and sensual qualities of interior decor and provides the foundations for an ontology of objects inseparable from a true metaphysics of human behaviour. |
