| Summary, etc. | L’identification du château de L’Héritière de Birague (1822) à l’authentique château de Brézé, près de Saumur, témoigne du sens architectural d’Honoré Balzac, alias Lord R’Hoone, dans la mise en scène du roman frénétique qui use d’un vocabulaire gothique, tout en déployant une intrigue inscrite dans une véritable topographie palimpseste. Cette topographie fantomatique est analysée ici afin de la comparer au véritable château de Brézé, que Balzac a pu visiter à la fin de l’été 1820. Il l’a gardée à l’esprit en écrivant au second semestre 1821 L’Héritière de Birague. C’est un parfait exemple de ce que fera ensuite l’auteur de La Comédie humaine. |

| Summary, etc. | The identification of the château in L’Héritière de Birague (1822) with the actual château de Brézé, near Saumur, testifies to the architectural awareness of Honoré de Balzac, alias Lord R’Hoone, in the mise-en-scène of a roman noir that draws on Gothic vocabulary within a plot set in a truly palimpsest-like topography. This spectral topography is analysed here in order to compare it to the actual château de Brézé which Balzac was able to visit at the end of the summer of 1820. He kept it in mind while writing L’Héritière de Birague in the second semester of 1821. It is a perfect example of the writing of one who will become the author of La Comédie humaine. |
