| Summary, etc. | Les travaux dans les domaines du genre et de la sexualité en Grèce et à Rome constituent un apport fondamental à l’histoire du corps antique. L’influence théorique des women’s studies, des gender studies et des travaux de Michel Foucault, à la fin du XXe siècle, a joué un rôle important dans l’orientation de la recherche actuelle. Les études du début du XXIe siècle favorisent la mise au jour de l’ensemble des catégories signifiantes grecques et romaines dans la perception des corps (le sexe, l’âge, le statut, l’apparence physique, les pratiques érotiques, la posture du corps, les gestes et la tessiture de la voix) : la place, relative, accordée aux organes sexuels dans la distinction des corps, les progrès de l’archéologie portant sur l’identification du sexe des squelettes, l’érotisme antique, la question du travail sexuel dans l’Antiquité font l’objet d’un intérêt renouvelé. Ces études, qui font se croiser l’archéologie, l’anthropologie, l’histoire politique et sociale et la linguistique, proposent une lecture sensible aux différentes conceptions du corps selon les contextes historiques et les pratiques discursives. |

| Summary, etc. | Bodies, Sexuality, and Gender in Ancient Greek and Roman Societies.Gender and sexuality studies in Greece and in Rome provide a fundamental development to the history of the ancient body. At the end of the twentieth century, the theoretical import of gender studies, of women’s studies, and of Michel Foucault’s work has played an important part in the orientations of today’s research. Early twenty-first-century research has tended to focus on defining all relevant Greek and Roman categories in the perception of bodies (gender, age, social status, physical appearance, erotic practices, deportment, gestures, quality of voice): the variable importance given to sexual organs in the distinction between bodies, the progress of archeology devoted to identification of skeletons, ancient eroticism, the issue of sexual work in antiquity, all these are subjected to a renewed interest. These studies where archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, political, and social history interact offer a reading aware of the various conceptions of the body according to historical context and to the pragmatical nature of the documents. |
