Si l’aventurier italien avait fini par incarner pour beaucoup un ennemi public, son élimination permettait aussi au jeune monarque d’affirmer une autorité royale encore ébranlée par des guerres de religion à peine éteintes ; et fragilisée par des Grands assez puissants pour espérer un partage du pouvoir, ou à tout le moins la reconnaissance d’un droit à intervenir dans les affaires du royaume. Le supplice infligé par des parisiens au cadavre de Concini revêt à cet égard tous les caractères d’une approbation populaire de la décision d’un roi qui renforça ensuite de manière spectaculaire les structures de la monarchie absolue. |

While the Italian adventurer became for many an embodiment of a public enemy, his elimination also enabled the young monarch to assert his royal authority, which was still shaken after religious wars that had barely ended—and was weakened by those mighty enough to hope that they could share power or at least win recognition of their right to intervene in the affairs of the kingdom. The torture of Concini’s corpse at the hands of Parisians had, in this respect, all the characteristics of a popular endorsement of the decision of a king who then dramatically reinforced the structures of the absolute monarchy. |
