| Summary, etc. | Au siècle de la fabrique patrimoniale du classicisme, Le Vayer apparaît comme un compilateur de Pyrrhon et de Sextus Empiricus sans originalité de pensée. La plupart des critiques n’ont pas voulu voir la puissance dévastatrice de son argumentation antichrétienne. Celle‑ci relève à leurs yeux des inconséquences d’un philosophe « honnête homme » qui use du scepticisme comme d’une propédeutique de la foi. Mais alors que s’impose cette représentation anodine du discours philosophique de Le Vayer, émerge une autre vision, plus hétérodoxe, dans les considérations inquiètes des premiers historiographes du libertinage (Étienne, Kerviler) ou dans les intuitions de leurs successeurs immédiats (Denis, Perrens). |

| Summary, etc. | During the century in which the heritage of classicism was produced, Le Vayer was presented as a compiler of Pyrrho and Sextus Empiricus, without any original thought of his own. Most critics refused to acknowledge the devastating power of his arguments against Christianity. They saw these as the irrelevant products of a philosophy of the “honnête homme,” which used skepticism as a propaedeutic for faith. At the same time that this anodyne representation of Le Vayer’s philosophical discourse was being established, another more heterodox vision emerged, in the uneasy reflections of the first historiographers of libertinism (Étienne, Kerviler) and of their immediate successors (Denis, Perrens). |
