| Summary, etc. | Le christianisme approfondit sans doute l’ambiguïté qui frappe le corps humain de façon presque originelle – le sôma platonicien l’atteste. Partagé entre sa corruptibilité, dont il n’est pas en lui-même responsable, et la promesse de sa Résurrection, il est fustigé autant que glorifié. Il en est de même chez Pascal, si naturellement enclin à souligner la réversibilité des choses, leur vanité comme leur raison d’être. Plus soucieux de repérer sa charge existentielle que de le condamner de façon moraliste ou de l’étudier de façon scientifique, Pascal se distingue ainsi par l’importance qu’il lui accorde d’un bout à l’autre des Pensées, avec un regard quasi phénoménologique. |

| Summary, etc. | In some ways, Christianity’s ambivalence about the body intensifies the Platonic ambiguity of the word sôma, which can mean either “tomb” or “sign.” Christian authors highlight the body’s corruptibility—which it is actually not responsible for—as well as its promised Resurrection. So does Pascal, naturally disposed to underlining the reversibility of all things. He refuses to unequivocally condemn the body, nor is he satisfied with taking an exclusively scientific approach to its materiality. Instead, he investigates, adopting a quasi-phenomenological perspective, its existential weight throughout his Pensées. |
