| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | The work of the Académie royale des sciences extended well beyond its rooms at the Bibliothèque du Roi. Academicians met with other savants in several Parisian circles that formed a “penumbra” to the formal institution. These private groups, some only recently identified, were especially important for chemistry. They fostered collaborations and allowed savants to display their talents, thus providing the background for the subsequent admission of some of them to the Académie. This paper examines the involvement of four chemistry savants—Duclos, Borelly, Homberg, and d’Alencé—in these circles, thus providing a fuller portrait of their work and interests, especially in transmutational chemistry which was officially forbidden at the Académie. |
