| Summary, etc. | Diplomatie culturelle et sportive américaine : persuasion et propagande durant la Guerre froideCet article s’attache au fonctionnement de la diplomatie culturelle et sportive américaine sur le long terme, montrant comment les Jeux olympiques ont été amenés à jouer un rôle déterminant en s’intégrant au sein de la stratégie américaine de guerre froide. Depuis la doctrine dite du containment dans les années 1950 jusqu’au rolling back des années 1980, les valeurs de l’olympisme coïncident avec les valeurs nationales américaines, offrant un outil culturel et politique susceptible de jouer dans les affaires politiques internes et étrangères et s’appuyant sur la prédominance américaine en matière de communication et d’information. Certaines personnalités influentes proches des hautes sphères du pouvoir tentèrent de « libérer » le mouvement olympique, entrevoyant comment ceci leur permettrait de prévaloir, réformant ses mécanismes financiers et assurant ainsi une prédominance au sein de ce forum international. |

| Summary, etc. | Diplomatie culturelle et sportive américaine : persuasion et propagande durant la Guerre froideThis article focuses on the long-term functioning of public diplomacy, showing how particularly the Olympics evolved to play a central role within US foreign policy strategy during the Cold War. From the « containment doctrine » in the fifties to the « rolling back » of the eighties, the values of olympism progressively coincided with US national values, and so offered a political and cultural tool in foreign as well as internal affairs, building on the comparative US advantage in communication and information. Attempting to « liberate » the Olympic movement was seen by certain people in high circles of power as a unique opportunity to prevail, and through closer control of funding mechanisms, as a means of achieving predominance within this international forum. |
