| Summary, etc. | Des accords de Bretton Woods à l’accord sur l’Union européenne des paiements (1944-1950). C’est durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale que s’élaborent, à l’initiative des Américains, les institutions appelées à orienter et à encadrer les relations monétaires internationales au lendemain des hostilités. À Bretton Woods, en 1944, sont conclus les deux accords qui donnent naissance au Fonds monétaire international et à la Banque internationale de reconstruction et de développement. Toutefois, l’évolution des conditions économiques et politiques, après 1945, empêche la pleine réalisation de l’ordre monétaire dessiné à Bretton Woods. Si l’universalisme ne disparaît pas, le régionalisme, incarné en particulier par l’Union européenne des paiements, représente une formule réaliste pour faire face à la situation dramatique qui prévaut en Europe. |

| Summary, etc. | Des accords de Bretton Woods à l’accord sur l’Union européenne des paiements (1944-1950). Following American initiatives, the institutions aimed at guiding and managing international monetary relations after the hostilities were conceived during the Second World War. At Bretton Woods, in 1944, both agreements, which give birth to the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, were concluded. Nevertheless, the evolution of the economic and political conditions after 1945 hindered the full achievement of the international monetary order elaborated at Bretton Woods. Whilst universalism had not disappeared, regionalism, embodied in particular by the European Payments Union, represented a realistic formula to face the critical situation prevailing in Europe. |
