| Summary, etc. | En biologie, le terme métamorphose désigne un phénomène précis, au cours duquel un état larvaire d’un animal (instar) se transforme en un nouvel état (imago), dont la morphologie est souvent très différente. Ces métamorphoses sont spectaculaires et suscitent la surprise. Cependant, une étude fine du mécanisme de métamorphose laisse entrevoir un aspect automatique, quasiment déterminé, de la métamorphose, lié à la révélation tridimensionnelle d’un plan 2D latent, par lequel des anneaux concentriques se déploient comme une canne à pêche télescopique. Ce qui peut paraître surprenant, pour un observateur humain, est en réalité la transformation la plus simple physiquement, et sans doute la seule, qu’une larve puisse subir. La surprise, au fond, c’est qu’il n’y a aucune surprise. |

| Summary, etc. | In biology, metamorphosis refers to the precise phonomenon during which an animal morphs from its larval state (the instar) into a new state (the imago), acquiring a morphology which is often very different. These metamorphoses are spectacular and seem surprising. Yet an in-depth study into the ways in which the metamorphosis works hints at an automatic, almost predetermined aspect linked to the tridimensional revelation of a latent 2D plan in which concentric rings open out like a telescopic fishing rod. What may seem surprising to human observers actually turns out to be physically the simplest transformation, and probably the only one, which a larva can undergo. The real surprise lies in the fact that there is nothing surprising. |

| Summary, etc. | No domínio da biologia, o termo de metamorfose designa um fenómeno preciso durante o qual o estado larvar de um animal ( instar) dá origem a um novo estado ( imago) cuja morfologia é profundamente diferente da anterior. Por serem espectaculares, estas metamorfoses suscitam surpresa. Um estudo minucioso do mecanismo que preside à metamorfose permite, no entanto, vislumbrar um aspecto automático, quase predeterminado, da metamorfose ligado à revelação tridimensional de um plano em duas dimensões latentes através do qual anéis concêntricos se expandem como se de uma cana de pesca telescópica se tratasse. Aquilo que, para a observação humana, pode parecer surpreendente, não passa assim, na realidade, de uma das transformações mais simples do ponto de vista da física, a única que a larva provavelmente possa sofrer. No fundo, a única surpresa é não haver surpresa alguma. |
