| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa construction des premiers bâtiments néogothiques est précédée de plus d’un siècle d’une gothic mood qui touche les arts du décor, pour le spectacle comme pour la maison et les jardins, mais surtout les arts graphiques et la peinture. Des emprunts plus ou moins fantaisistes à l’architecture gothique permirent d’évoquer le passé non classique dès le début du xviiie siècle. Ils devinrent plus systématiques à la veille de la Révolution, quand le goût pour l’histoire se répandit, et dominèrent le style troubadour à l’époque de l’Empire. Le romantisme et l’historicisme devaient multiplier les «citations» d’art médiéval, mais sans les connotations poétiques et sentimentales de ce néogothique pictural. |

| Summary, etc. | The construction of the first neogothic buildings was preceded by more than a century of «gothic mood» in the arts of decoration, for theatre sets as well as for the home, but mainly for graphic arts and painting. Borrowing, in a more or less eccentric way, from gothic architecture, allowed to evoke the non classical past as soon as the beginning of the 18 th century. These borrowings became more systematic at the dawn of the Revolution, when a fad for history developed, and they dominated the troubadour style during the Empire period. Romanticism and historicism will then multiply the «quotations» of medieval art, but without the poetic and sentimental connotations of this pictorial neogothic. |
