| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa bijouterie néogothique française apparaît vers 1820 sous l’influence romantique et connaît sa plus grande vogue sous la Monarchie de Juillet, puis un bref renouveau sous le Second Empire. Le bijou néogothique appartient à un courant stylistique majeur du xixe siècle, l’historicisme. Mis au goût du jour par les élites, il séduit ensuite la bourgeoisie, puis une clientèle plus large, grâce à une production en petite série. Son déclin, dans la décennie 1850, correspond à celui de la mode romantique. Le style néogothique est également desservi par une contradiction économique : éphémère comme toute mode, il a duré assez longtemps pour être largement plagié, donc affadi. Il est, de ce point de vue, représentatif de l’éclectisme, caractéristique de la bijouterie du xixe siècle. |

| Summary, etc. | The French neogothic jewellery appears around 1820 under the romantic influence and meets its greatest success under the Monarchy of July, followed by a brief revival during the Second Empire. The neogothic jewel belongs to a major stylistic trend in the 19 th century, historicism. Made fashionable by the elite, it then seduces the bourgeoisie, followed by a larger clientele, thanks to small mass production. Its decline, in the 1850’s, goes along with the romantic fashion. The neogothic style was also disadvantaged by an economical contradiction : although ephemeral like all fashions, it lasted long enough to be largely plagiarized, therefore made insipid. From this point of view, it is characteristic of the eclecticism of the jewellery of the19th century. |
