| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe goût et l’intérêt pour l’art médiéval et la culture humaniste que le peintre Eugène Delacroix a acquis dès son enfance dans sa famille et au lycée Louis-le-Grand l’ont familiarisé très tôt à l’amour de l’antique et aux beautés de l’art gothique. Par ailleurs, en tant qu’artiste il recherche avant tout ce qui est à ses yeux la vérité de l’art, à savoir l’harmonie et l’équilibre de l’art des grands maîtres du passé. Aussi fustige-t-il tous les néo-classiques, néo-gothiques, etc., tous ces néos qui trahissent la vérité de l’art antique et de son idéal qu’il estime quant à lui retrouver dans son œuvre plastique en inventant un langage moderne, celui du romantisme. L’étude s’appuie sur les écrits de l’artiste. |

| Summary, etc. | The painter Eugène Delacroix acquired a taste and interest for medieval art and humanist culture at an early age in his family and at Louis-le-Grand grammar school, which soon made him familiar with the love of the antic and the beauties of the gothic art. As an artist, he aims above all at finding what is, in his opinion, the truth of the art, namely the harmony and balance of the art of the great masters of the past. Therefore he thrashes all the neo-classics, neo-gothics, etc., all these « neos » who betray the truth of the antic art and its ideal, which he personally thinks can be found in his own plastic works through the invention of a modern language : romanticism. This study is based on the artist’s writings. |
